The film begins with the celebration of Muharram, the Islamic month of self-discipline and self-restraint, by the Muslims of Hyderabad against the rule of Moghul emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir. During the course of the celebrations, a group of Pashtun soldiers, led by Sikandar Khan (Anil Kapoor), arrives in the city to take charge of the city. The Nawab, Mir Sadiq Ali Khan (Sayaji Shinde) collapses after seeing the Pashtuns. He is rushed to hospital.His son, Prince Saleem Ali Khan (Sunil Shetty), takes over the administration of Hyderabad and vows to protect it from Sikandar. Saleem's brother Asad Ali Khan (Arbaaz Khan) is appointed Commander-in-Chief of Hyderabad's army against Sikandar's forces. Asad Ali's daughter, Parveen (Ayesha Takia), is secretly in love with Sikandar's son, Sher Khan (Uday Chopra).The young trio of Hyderabad became a legendary force of resistance against the Pashtun invaders. Aided by a guerilla force of peasants and lower class people, the trio hold out against the regular army of Sikandar until they are betrayed by their own. Even then, their valour and resilience astonishes Sikander.In the end it is revealed that Mir Sadiq Ali Khan is alive and was placed in a deathly state to create an atmosphere of despair for his enemies. Mir Sadiq Ali Khan, Saleem, Asad and their mother are all indeed alive. Sikandar comes before them to tell them that they cannot win this war. He is willing to stop the war if Prince Saleem gives his throne up to Sikandar. Prince Saleem denies Sikandar's request and tells him that he can fight on till death for his throne.With two of the most powerful forces in history at loggerheads, with lives hanging in the balance, the film ends with a "To Be Continued..."
